In consecutive interpretation, the interpreter delivers the message after the speaker has finished talking. In this form of interpretation, the interpreter may interrupt the speaker and ask him/her to repeat, clarify or rephrase so as to ensure accuracy and completeness in the delivery of the message. When using note taking is referred as classic consecutive and when not using note taking is referred as short consecutive
1. Escort interpretation
An interpreter escorts a unilingual client during a day or more for all his activities (professional or other) and facilitates his/her communication in different settings and contexts. This form of interpretation is most common in business and tourism.
2. Conference call
This is an interpretation over the phone involving at least three people.
3. Court interpretation
In a court setting, the interpreter is asked to perform an interpretation for a client who does not share the language in which proceedings take place. The interpreter may be asked to perform both consecutive and simultaneous interpretation and/or alternate between the two. In case of simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter is asked to whisper in the client's ear. (See whispered interpretation definition)
4. Community or institutional interpretation
Community Interpreting is usually done in the consecutive mode. It enables speakers of non-official languages to communicate with providers of public services (and have access to those services) such as healthcare, government agencies, community centres, legal clinics, educational institutions, and social services.
Another characteristic of community interpretation is that services are provided to the members of the community rather than delegates or visitors.
Other terms have been used to describe community interpreting such as "public service interpreting", "cultural interpreting", "dialogue interpreting", "liaison interpreting" and "ad hoc interpreting" however Community interpreting remains the most widely accepted.
5. Whispered interpretation
Whether simultaneous or consecutive, this form of interpretation is particularly demanding. The interpreter has to listen carefully and transmit, by whispering in the client's ear, what said. The difficulty of this interpretation resides in the fact that often many whispered interpretations could take place at the same time for a number of languages. The interpreter works next to one or no more than a couple of listeners.
